Growing info
When you get your seedlings home?
Seedlings are started indoors and slowly moved out to an unheated tunnel house. They will be reasonably hardy upon collection but it is always best to give them 2-3 days outside during the day and inside at night to allow them to acclimatise.
How do I plant out Tomatoes?
You have a few options here. You can either plant them outdoor or in a pot or planter bag. I grow a couple of tomato plants in raised beds but mostly in reusable 45L Growbags (see Accessories) in my tunnel house.
I use Tui Tomato Mix and plant the tomato deep so the soil is right up the neck of the plant. This allows for more root growth which in turn allows for more feeding and ultimately more fruit. I also add blood and bone and a good hand full of milk powder under the roots. Discard old growing mix outside onto the garden.
What about Pumpkin?
Poo, Poo, Poo! Pumpkins love a good mix of rotted down poo and compost so add a good amount to your soil prior to planting out. If you can't get your hands on any grab a big bag of Blood and Bone from Diacks or Nicols. Remember to alway pinch out the runners so the existing fruit swells up to a decent size.
What about Zucchini & Squash?
Will grow pretty much anywhere but a generous helping of Blood and Bone at planting and a good liquid feed every now and again through out the growing season will keep them going. I moan every year about too many Zucchini in Summer but still plant the same number of plants! They truly are a verstile vege. Remember not to over water or your will end up with big tasteless marrows.
What about Cucumber?
Cucumber is one of those vegetables that tastes miles better when its homegrown. I grow a couple of varieties on top of the 'Lebanese' cucumber. 'Apple' and 'Poona Keerna' are both worth a shot. Both of these are delish off the vine and a perfect size for kiddies to munch on.
What about Chillies and Peppers?
This is my new favourite addiction. Last season I had a variety of both chillies and peppers in my tunnelhouse and what a huge success they were. We had the peppers in the usual ways, salads, pizza, quiche, roasted. It wasnt until I bottled them into a sweet chilli pepper jam at the end of the season that I knew I was onto a winner! Pot them up like you would Tomatoes. I use 20L pots but a reusable 90c 10L bucket from The Warehouse (with a couple of hole drilled in the bottom) would work just as well. Liquid feed through the growing season.
